FORMATIV (2009)

The FORMATIV designer group originated in Christina Karababa´s  „Performatives Prototyping“ seminar during the 2008/2009 winter semester at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

FORMATIV is a research group for experimentation and research in digital imaging and design affiliated with the Institute for Research in Applied Arts (IRAA). Our main focus is the experimental use of digital imaging and modelling techniques.

In bringing together technologies, materials, forms, traces as well as performative gestures it follows new ways in the generation of form.

The play with distancing effects and transformation is enlivened by spontaneity and directness.

The FORMATIV group‘s design work and research is based on seven principles.

I Positive and playful experimentation with digital imaging and design tools

II The combination of low-tech and high-tech

III Modulation of forms and objects through process iteration

IV Systematic experimentation with the dysfunctional

use of software and hardware tools

V The conscious use of errors as a method and integral part of design processes

VI The use of innovative scanning methods for morphing and the transformation of objects

VII Experimental visualisation and documentation of working processes as an element of holistic design processes.
